President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will pardon Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras. Hernández is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking after being extradited from his home country.
Trump made the announcement while commenting on Honduras's upcoming national election. He warned that the U.S. could cut aid to the Central American nation if the candidate he supports does not win this Sunday.
The pardon would clear Hernández of his U.S. federal crimes. The former leader was convicted for his role in a conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States.
