KMT Leader Aims to Host Xi Jinping in Taiwan
The chairwoman of Taiwan's main opposition party says she hopes to invite China's leader to the island if her party regains power. Cheng Li-wun of the Kuomintang (KMT) spoke to reporters in Beijing on Friday. Her comments came just hours after a historic meeting with Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping. It was the first such meeting between party leaders in nine years. Both leaders emphasized peace between the two sides during their talks. Cheng stated that "compatriots on both sides are members of the Chinese nation." Cheng now says her goal is to invite Xi to visit Taiwan. This would happen if the KMT wins the island's presidential election in 2028. The KMT favors closer ties with Beijing but rejects unification by force. The current ruling party in Taiwan, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), strongly objects to this idea. They view it as a threat to Taiwan's sovereignty.
