The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel on Wednesday. The attack marks a new escalation along the tense border.
Hezbollah stated it struck the Israeli settlement of Manara. It said the rocket attack was a direct response to what it called Israeli violations of the unofficial ceasefire agreement. The group did not provide further details about the alleged violations.
Israeli military sources confirmed that approximately 20 projectiles were launched from Lebanon. Sirens sounded in several northern communities. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
This exchange follows a period of reduced, but ongoing, clashes. A fragile truce has held along the Israel-Lebanon frontier since a major conflict was averted last autumn. However, both sides have continued to exchange fire intermittently.
The latest strike raises concerns that the cycle of retaliation could intensify. International mediators continue to call for restraint from both Israel and Hezbollah.
