This move comes as the United States reduces its role under the administration of Donald Trump. Beijing is motivated by three key factors. First, it seeks to enhance its international reputation and diplomatic influence. Second, leadership in green technology offers significant economic advantages in a growing global market. Third, addressing severe domestic pollution and environmental degradation is a critical national priority. However, two major challenges could limit China's ambitions. The country's economy remains heavily dependent on coal and other fossil fuels, making a rapid transition difficult. Additionally, the high costs of developing and implementing new green technologies present a significant financial burden. China's pursuit of climate leadership is therefore a balancing act between its global aspirations and complex domestic realities.
