The government of Malawi has declared a major parliamentary investigation into a state hotel deal "incomplete" and "flawed." This action throws the probe into fresh controversy.
The report investigated the Amaryllis Hotel project. It was completed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament.
In a strong statement, the government said the report cannot withstand serious scrutiny. It criticized the committee for not questioning key individuals and companies involved.
Specifically, the government noted the exclusion of Colleen Zamba. She is the former Secretary to the President and Cabinet, the nation's top civil servant. The committee also did not question Yusuf Investments Limited, a company central to the hotel deal.
By rejecting the findings, the government has cast doubt on the investigation's conclusions. This move is likely to create further political debate over the project.
