A former Ukrainian intelligence general has died while serving with Russian forces. The officer, a former major general in Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), was reportedly killed in combat on March 17.
Before his death, he was responsible for "filtration" operations in the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine. These operations, run by Russian forces and their allies, involve screening, interrogating, and detaining civilians from captured areas.
The ex-general, identified as Lyapkin, had switched sides to fight for Russia. His death highlights the complex divisions within the security services since the full-scale invasion began.
