First-Grader's Silence Broken by Classmates' Surprising Move
A simple act of kindness by a group of first-graders is transforming their entire school. Ben O'Reilly, 7, is the only deaf student at Campton Elementary in New Hampshire. He also has other special needs. This often left him feeling alone. But his classmates decided to change that. They began learning American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with him. The effort started small. Then it spread across the school. More students started learning basic signs to include Ben. The result was immediate. Ben's isolation faded as he could finally chat with his peers. School officials say the compassion of these young students has created a more inclusive environment for everyone.
