A Michigan political candidate is facing criticism after a confusing answer to a direct question.
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate, was asked if the world would be better off without Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In his response, he criticized both the Ayatollah's regime and past U.S. administrations.
Republican opponents quickly accused El-Sayed of comparing the Ayatollah's government to the Trump presidency. They called his answer a "word salad," meaning confusing or meaningless speech.
The incident occurred during a televised interview. El-Sayed has not yet clarified his statement.
The race for Michigan's open Senate seat is considered highly competitive.
