The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has ordered all American government personnel and citizens to leave Iraq immediately. The emergency directive cites a specific and credible threat of militia attacks.
In a security alert, the embassy warned of possible strikes targeting the Iraqi capital. These attacks could occur within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The warning did not name a specific militia group. However, Iran-aligned armed factions operate widely in Iraq. These groups have frequently attacked U.S. interests in the past.
The embassy has suspended all public services. Officials instructed citizens not to approach the embassy compound in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.
This "immediate departure" order is among the strongest warnings the State Department can issue. It signals an urgent belief that the threat of violence is imminent and severe.
