President Donald Trump has dismissed concerns over Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium (HEU), stating he "does not care" about it. He argued the material is deep underground and can be monitored by satellite.
This statement directly challenges a key US justification for the ongoing war with Iran, which began on 28 February.
Experts warn that if the war ends with Iran's regime still holding its 440kg of HEU, the outcome would be riskier than before the conflict started. Iran would be significantly closer to a nuclear warhead capability than if a potential pre-war negotiated settlement had been pursued.
