A 27-meter-tall Norway spruce now stands in the center of St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. Workers sourced the tree from the forest of Ultimo, a town in the northern Italian region of South Tyrol.
The tree's installation marks the official start of the Vatican's festive season preparations. The tradition of erecting a Christmas tree in the square dates back several decades.
The spruce will be decorated with lights and ornaments in the coming weeks. It will remain on display throughout the holiday period.
