Israel's parliament passed a law on Monday allowing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of murdering Israelis.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally attended the vote to support it. The law is a major victory for Israel's far-right political factions, which strongly advocated for the measure.
It makes death by hanging the standard punishment for West Bank Palestinians found guilty of killings motivated by nationalism. The law also grants Israeli courts the power to impose this sentence.
Currently, Israel has not carried out a civilian execution since 1962. The country's military courts in the occupied West Bank have never used the death penalty.
