Hong Kong Contractor in Deadly Fire Had History of Safety Offences
The contractor managing renovation work at the site of Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades has a record of safety violations. Prestige Construction & Engineering Co Limited was previously convicted for breaching safety rules. Labour Department records show the company was convicted of two safety offences at a Mid-Levels project in November 2023. Despite this legal history, the firm later began renovation work at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po. A massive fire broke out at that estate in 2024. The blaze is now the city's most severe in decades.
