Burkina Faso's Military Leader Delays Elections, Exits Regional Bloc

Captain Ibrahim Traoré has postponed Burkina Faso's elections until 2029. He also dissolved the nation's independent electoral commission. These moves extend his military rule, which began three years ago when he seized power. At that time, Traoré promised to improve national security and return the country to civilian leadership. These promises have not been fulfilled. The security situation remains severe, and the path to democracy has stalled. In a further shift, Traoré's government has withdrawn from two major international bodies. Burkina Faso has left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a key West African political and economic union. The country has also exited the International Criminal Court (ICC). These actions have increased the nation's diplomatic isolation.
