Scientists Detect Possible Lightning on Mars
Researchers believe they have captured the sound of lightning on Mars. A microphone on NASA's Perseverance rover recorded the crackling noises, which are thought to be electrical discharges. A French-led scientific team reported the findings. They identified 55 instances of these "mini lightning" events over two Martian years. The electrical activity primarily occurred during dust storms and dust devils. Nearly all instances happened on the windiest Martian days, suggesting a strong link between dust activity and the discharges.
