Former football star and Liberian President George Weah has publicly criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He says CAF was wrong to take away Senegal's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
CAF removed the title from Senegal, the reigning champions, earlier this week. The decision is due to a government interference case against the Senegalese Football Federation.
Weah, a former Ballon d'Or and three-time African Player of the Year, expressed his strong disapproval. He believes the punishment unfairly targets the Senegalese national team, known as the Teranga Lions. They won the championship in Rabat, Morocco, in January.
The controversy centers on Senegal's football federation. CAF rules forbid political influence in national football associations. The Senegalese team now risks missing the next AFCON tournament unless the issue is resolved.
Weah's comments add a prominent voice to the growing debate over CAF's decision. The ruling has shocked the African football community.
