For years, Buck Angel was a celebrated figure in the transgender community. As a female-to-male (FTM) transsexual who underwent full medical transition, including a phalloplasty, he was a pioneer in visibility and a vocal advocate for transgender rights. Today, however, he finds himself at odds with the movement he helped build.

Angel’s shift in perspective is not a rejection of transgender identity, but a sharp critique of what he calls a “cult-like” ideology that has overtaken the conversation. He argues that the current trans rights movement has abandoned its scientific and medical roots in favor of a subjective, feelings-based definition of gender.

The Core of the Conflict: Identity vs. Reality

Angel’s primary concern is the redefinition of the term “transgender.” He distinguishes between someone who medically transitions—changing their biological sex characteristics to align with their gender identity—and someone who identifies as the opposite sex without any medical intervention.

“I transitioned my body,” Angel states. “I changed my sex. That is different from saying you are a woman because you feel like one.”

He argues that erasing this distinction is dangerous. By claiming that “trans women are women” without qualification, the movement ignores the biological reality of sex. For Angel, a person who has not undergone any medical transition is not a transsexual; they are a cross-dresser or a person with a gender identity that does not match their sex. He insists this is not a moral judgment, but a factual one.

The Danger of Dogma

Angel warns that the movement has become hostile to dissent. He describes a culture where asking questions—such as the role of biology or the ethics of medicalizing children—is met with accusations of bigotry.

“You cannot question anything,” he explains. “If you say, ‘I believe in biological sex,’ you are labeled a TERF [Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist] or a transphobe.”

This environment, he argues, has silenced scientists, doctors, and even other trans people who hold nuanced views. He points to the surge in young people, particularly adolescent girls, identifying as transgender, and questions whether social contagion is a factor—a hypothesis that is now taboo to discuss.

The Problem with Medicalizing Youth

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Angel’s current stance is his position on medical transition for minors. While he supports adults making their own choices, he believes that puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones are being prescribed too readily to children.

“We are experimenting on children,” he says. “We are giving them drugs that sterilize them, that stop their development, and we are telling them it is reversible. The data does not support that.”

He cites the high rates of desistance—where children who identify as transgender later grow to accept their birth sex—as a reason for extreme caution. He advocates for a “watchful waiting” approach, allowing children to socially transition (change name, pronouns, clothing) without medical intervention until they are old enough to give informed consent.

A Plea for Nuance

Buck Angel does not deny the existence of transgender people. He is one. But he believes the movement has lost its way by prioritizing ideology over evidence and by silencing debate.

“I am not against trans people,” he clarifies. “I am against a dogma that is hurting people. We need to be able to have a conversation without calling each other names. We need to protect the most vulnerable, and right now, I believe we are failing.”

His message is a call to return to a reality-based discussion: one that respects the experiences of transsexuals like himself, while also protecting children and acknowledging the immutable reality of biological sex.
