Russia's Covert War on the West Intensifies

· 2 min read ·

Western intelligence agencies and governments are raising alarms over a sustained campaign of covert aggression by Russia, aimed at destabilizing Europe and undermining support for Ukraine. This multi-front effort blends espionage, sabotage, disinformation, and direct threats, operating below the threshold of open warfare.

European officials publicly accuse Russia of conducting a widespread covert campaign of sabotage and subversion across the continent [17763]. These alleged operations include plots to damage military aid routes to Ukraine, arson attacks, and cyber intrusions designed to weaken European infrastructure and unity [17763]. Germany has formally labeled this a "hybrid" attack, expelling Russian diplomats in response to a campaign it says includes hacking and disinformation [24609].

The head of the United Kingdom's MI6 foreign intelligence service, Blaise Metreweli, states that Russia is actively trying to "export chaos" to other nations [26392]. She warns that Moscow uses a mix of espionage, online influence campaigns, and other covert methods to create division and instability abroad [26392][26966]. This campaign is seen as a deliberate strategy to weaken Western societies from within.

The threats are not only covert. Senior Russian officials have made direct public threats against Western politicians. Germany condemned a statement from former President Dmitry Medvedev that mentioned "kidnapping" the leader of Germany's main opposition party [42164]. Furthermore, a top Kremlin-aligned media host has threatened that any European "non-combat" missions in Ukraine, such as advisory or training roles, will be targeted for destruction after the war ends [47517].

This aggressive posture is coupled with efforts to control the narrative of the war in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin has framed the invasion as a "holy mission" [44031], while Russia's foreign intelligence service launched a bizarre attack on the spiritual leader of world Orthodoxy, calling him an "Antichrist in a cassock" for supporting an independent Ukrainian church [49882]. Simultaneously, Ukraine warns that Russia may be planning a false flag attack during a religious holiday, aiming to blame Ukraine for a massacre to justify further escalation [40077].

The European Union has dismissed recent Russian claims—such as an alleged drone attack on Putin's residence—as a "deliberate distraction" from genuine peace efforts [38367]. Western assessments conclude that these actions form a coherent Kremlin strategy: to weaken democratic resolve, fracture transatlantic unity, and erode support for Kyiv through a constant drumbeat of chaos and threat [26392][26966].
