A Syrian court has issued its first verdicts for last year's massacres of Alawites on the Syrian coast, sentencing one Assad supporter to death and handing prison terms to others.

A Syrian court on Thursday issued its first verdicts for the massacres of Alawites on the Syrian coast last year, handing down a death sentence and prison terms in a case that marks the first judicial reckoning for the violence [243309][243384].

The rulings cover four of seven defendants. A supporter of deposed president Bashar al-Assad was sentenced to death, while a former member of government forces received 20 years in prison and another defendant was given life in jail [243309][243384].

Verdicts for the remaining three defendants will be issued later, the court said [243384].

The coastal violence in 2025 targeted the Alawite community, the sect to which the deposed president belonged. The massacres were among the deadliest episodes of communal bloodshed to follow the collapse of Assad's rule.
