UN: Methane Leaks Are a Climate “Emergency Brake”—Cutting Them Now Could Slow Warming Within Years
Methane traps over 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide in the short term and causes 25% of global heating today—yet super-emitting leaks continue worldwide, even as some nations finally start plugging them.
The world is facing a double climate emergency: temperatures are set to blow past the 1.5°C threshold within years, while potent methane emissions accelerate the crisis. Methane, the main component of natural gas, is released during fossil fuel extraction, livestock digestion, and waste decomposition. Unlike carbon dioxide, which lingers for centuries, methane breaks down quickly—meaning cutting leaks now can slow warming within years, not decades.
In 2023, environmental reporters documented more than 1,000 super-emitting methane leaks across the globe, with Turkmenistan identified as the worst offender for these mega-leaks. Now, Turkmenistan has begun to plug them, and experts call such action the climate “emergency brake” [234144].
The urgency is clear: the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that current emission trajectories will push temperatures past the 1.5°C limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement within the next few years [234117][233287]. Even a temporary overshoot would trigger severe impacts, including melting polar ice, collapsing coral reefs, and extreme heatwaves [233287].
The UN has formally acknowledged that staying within 1.5°C is now “unavoidably” out of reach. Even under the most optimistic scenarios, temperatures will rise by at least 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century [232960][233595]. That means every fraction of a degree matters—and methane cuts offer one of the fastest ways to reduce near-term warming.
The UN’s new strategy focuses on “overshoot, peak, and decline”—allowing a temporary temperature spike, then actively working to bring temperatures back down through rapid emissions cuts and carbon removal technologies [234117][233287]. Officials stress that deep, sustained reductions in greenhouse gases remain critical, even if the original target is missed [233240][233395].
Livestock is a major methane source. Cows, sheep, and goats are ruminants that produce methane through digestion, while pig manure stored in large lagoons releases both methane and nitrous oxide. Global livestock production accounts for a major share of human-caused emissions [233246]. Solutions already exist: changing animal feed can reduce methane from digestion, and covering manure lagoons can capture gas for use as fuel—but these require investment and policy support [233246].
Other countries have yet to follow Turkmenistan’s lead on plugging leaks. The question remains why the world isn’t acting faster on a solution that could deliver immediate climate benefits [234144].
