London’s Only Women’s Sculpture Park Faces Demolition for VIP Cocktail Lounge

The Artist’s Garden, the world’s only sculpture park devoted solely to women, could be turned into a generic cocktail lounge. The park was created a decade ago by Claire Mander, who discovered the hidden rooftop above Temple underground station and transformed it into a cultural space. The site sits above ground that once housed a 17th-century sculpture garden created by the Countess of Arundel, and the rooftop itself was built in 1870 as part of the Victoria Embankment [1].

Mander, who runs the park as director and curator of the Colab arts charity, said the fight to save it has begun. “We have to become warriors,” she told the Guardian [1]. The park was established to counterbalance London’s monuments, most of which were made by men [1]. No final decision has been announced, but the future of the unique cultural space remains uncertain [1].
