Latvia and Ukraine to Build Drone Factory Right on Russia’s Border
Ukraine is racing to build a joint drone factory with Latvia just meters from the Russian border, while a Czech charity buys half of Ukraine’s new trainer planes to speed up pilot training.
Latvia will construct a joint drone manufacturing plant with Ukraine in the Latgale region, directly adjacent to the Russian border [185041]. The facility will also serve as a rapid-deployment base for interceptor drones designed to protect Latvia’s eastern flank [185041]. This comes as Ukraine’s defense industry is racing to produce more drones and missiles to increase military pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, a goal essential for the country’s survival but facing severe time constraints [184927].
Meanwhile, a Czech charity named “Gift for Putin” has purchased half of Ukraine’s new trainer planes [181551]. The light aircraft allow Ukraine to train future fighter pilots at home at a fraction of the cost of standard military jets, helping the country stretch its training budget while preparing more pilots for combat [181551].
In response, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said Moscow is building a unified information system powered by artificial intelligence to counter Ukrainian drone attacks, a project under development since April [184475]. The system aims to improve situational awareness to help Russian forces detect and respond to drones more quickly, though Belousov did not provide details on the technology or a timeline for deployment [184475].
