Turkey Takes Command of Key NATO Naval Force, Leads Major Drills in Germany
Turkey has assumed leadership of a critical NATO naval strike group and is deploying thousands of troops and homegrown military technology to spearhead the alliance’s largest exercises this year, showcasing its growing role in transatlantic security.
The Turkish Naval Forces formally took command of the NATO Amphibious Task Force and its Landing Force Command on July 1, a role it will hold for one year [54453]. This powerful naval group is designed for assaults from sea to land and gives Turkey responsibility for planning and leading NATO exercises and potential missions in the region.
Concurrently, the Turkish Armed Forces are playing a central part in NATO's Steadfast Defender 2024 exercises, its biggest drills this year. The deployment began with the first Turkish military aircraft landing at Germany’s Wunstorf Air Base, with approximately 2,000 Turkish troops participating in the February drills [70222].
Further demonstrating its operational capacity, Turkish naval and army units are conducting complex joint amphibious operations in Germany as part of the separate NATO exercise Steadfast Dart 2026 [80228]. A key feature of Turkey's participation is the prominent use of its own domestically produced defense platforms, which the exercises serve to showcase internationally [80228].
These movements come as Turkey pursues an ambitious goal to become a top-tier global defense exporter. The nation's Defense Industries Presidency has set a target for its companies to achieve an average export turnover of $300,000 per employee by 2026, a benchmark based on the world's most successful defense firms [63530].
The series of high-profile NATO command and deployment assignments underscores Turkey's active and technical role within the alliance's military structure, even as it seeks to expand its own defense industry footprint on the world stage.
