South Carolina moves to oust its only Black congressman in over a century

usa elections politics
James Clyburn, the only Black person to represent South Carolina in Congress since 1897, could lose his seat. State Republicans have proposed a new political map that would dismantle the district he currently serves. Clyburn's district, the sixth congressional district, stretches from the Georgia border near Savannah, north through Charleston, and into the stateโ€™s rural Black belt farmland. The proposal follows a recent Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act. If passed, the redrawn map would effectively remove Clyburn from office.
