Central Asia Moves to Coordinate on Climate and Water

Environment countries politics
Central Asia is not yet a fully unified regional actor on climate and water issues, but it is beginning to act like one in key areas. For the first time, the five former Soviet republics—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—are taking steps toward joint action. These steps, though limited, signal a shift from fragmented national responses to shared regional efforts. The move comes as the region faces severe water shortages and accelerating glacial melt, challenges that no single country can solve alone. While full coordination remains a distant goal, this emerging cooperation marks a notable change.
