Supreme Court Limits Race in Voting Maps, Reshapes Elections
The US Supreme Court restricted the use of race when drawing voting districts, in a decision that may change maps nationwide and help Republicans before the midterm elections. In a 6-3 ruling split by ideology, the conservative majority struck down a Louisiana map. That map created a second district where Black voters are the majority. The court found it was an illegal "racial gerrymander," even though lawmakers said they made the map to follow the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
