Sweden detects radiation, reveals Soviet nuclear disaster

On April 28, 1986, Swedish scientists detected abnormally high radiation levels in the atmosphere. Their finding exposed a reactor explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine that had occurred two days earlier. The Soviet Union initially remained silent about the accident. Only after Sweden raised the alarm did the USSR publicly acknowledge the disaster.
