China’s Truck-Mounted Nuclear Reactor Could Power AI Data Centers
China is testing a prototype nuclear reactor small enough to fit on a truck, a leading scientist has confirmed. The device, called the “world’s first 10-megawatt vehicle-mounted nuclear power unit,” has been under development for several years. Its output is enough to run a medium-sized artificial intelligence data centre. “The ‘nuclear power bank’ we proposed exemplifies the new generation of nuclear energy systems,” said Wu, a top researcher involved in the project. He added that the team is now looking for practical applications for the reactor. The mobile design aims to provide flexible, on-demand power for remote or energy-intensive operations, such as AI computing. No timeline for commercial deployment has been announced.
