Japan’s New Leader Pushes Military Overhaul, Expert Warns of ‘More Aggressive’ Policy
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has begun rewriting the country’s key security policies, arguing that Japan must strengthen its military to face geopolitical threats, including from China. During a meeting with experts tasked with revising major policy documents, Takaichi called for a more assertive defense posture.
A Chinese expert described the moves as a “fundamental” shift in Tokyo’s strategy, warning that Japan’s security roadmap is likely to become “more aggressive.” Beijing has not yet issued an official response but has previously voiced concern over any expansion of Japan’s military role.
The policy overhaul marks a significant departure from Japan’s post-World War II pacifist stance, raising questions about regional stability and the balance of power in East Asia.
