TSMC calls ASML ‘very very expensive’ in rare public complaint
TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, has made an unusual public complaint about ASML, the Dutch company that dominates the market for advanced chip-making machines. TSMC said ASML’s latest extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines are “very very expensive.”
EUV machines use light to etch tiny circuits onto silicon wafers. They are essential for making the most advanced computer chips. ASML is the only company that produces them, giving it a near-total monopoly.
TSMC is known for using its own strong market position to charge high prices for its chips. But the company rarely criticizes its suppliers. The complaint signals growing tension between the two industry giants.
ASML has not commented on TSMC’s remarks. The dispute highlights the high cost and strategic importance of the technology that powers the world’s smartphones, data centers, and artificial intelligence systems.
