US Navy eyes South Korea, Japan for warship building
The Pentagon is considering outsourcing warship design and construction to South Korea and Japan. A proposed $1.85 billion feasibility study could launch this plan, according to US media reports.
The study, included in the 2027 US budget, will examine adopting or co-producing advanced ship hulls. This includes Japan’s Mogami-class and South Korea’s Daegu-class frigates. The goal is to supplement the US Navy’s overstretched production lines, as reported by USNI News on Friday. If approved, the move would mark a significant shift in US naval shipbuilding strategy.
