HK$30 billion waste plant should become eco-tourism hub, Hong Kong lawmakers say
Hong Kong lawmakers are urging authorities to turn a new HK$30 billion (US$3.8 billion) municipal waste incinerator in Tuen Mun into a tourist attraction and an education centre for environmental protection. Their call came on Tuesday, after the government applied to the Legislative Council for HK$29.2 billion to build the planned Integrated Waste Management Facilities Phase 2, also known as I·PARK2. The updated cost is about 20 per cent lower than the earlier estimate of HK$35.7 billion. Samuel Chui Ho-kwong, the project director, said the facility is designed to burn waste and generate energy. Lawmakers believe it could also serve as a public site for learning about waste management and sustainability.
