Russia Tightens Internet Control, Blocks VPNs
Russia is escalating a digital crackdown by restricting virtual private networks, or VPNs. Experts call this a sophisticated new effort in state censorship.
Hugh Williamson, the Europe and Central Asia director for Human Rights Watch, says these restrictions are a key part of Russia's growing censorship system. This system has expanded greatly since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022.
He states the Kremlin's goal is to limit access to independent news, stop public discussion, and strengthen its political power. VPNs are tools that help users bypass government blocks to visit banned websites.
However, Williamson warns the strategy risks backfiring. It is causing rising public anger and economic problems. This could create new political risks for the government itself.
