Ceasefire Declared, But Israel Vows to Keep Troops in Lebanon
Israel has announced a 10-day ceasefire with Lebanon after weeks of intense fighting. The bombardments in southern Lebanon killed more than 2,000 people. They also forced more than one million residents from their homes. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately cast doubt on a lasting peace. He vowed that Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon. Their goal is to create a 10-kilometer "security zone" inside Lebanese territory. This condition raises a major question: Can a true ceasefire exist while one army occupies part of another country?
