Billionaire's Campaign Lead Clashes With Private Prison Investments
Billionaire activist Tom Steyer now leads the race to be California's next governor. A new poll shows him 21 percentage points ahead of his closest competitor. His campaign is funded by $112 million of his own money.
However, his substantial business investments are facing new scrutiny. Public records show his investment fund holds millions of dollars in companies that operate private prisons. These include contractors for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers.
This creates a direct conflict with his campaign platform. Steyer is running as a progressive Democrat who strongly criticizes ICE. He has called for major reforms to America's immigration detention system.
Steyer's campaign states his investments are managed independently by fund managers. They say he does not control day-to-day decisions. A spokesperson added that Steyer is "proud of his advocacy" for immigrants.
The revelation is likely to become a key issue in the primary election. His opponents are questioning how his political values align with his financial portfolio.
