Kim Jong-un Seeks Beijing Boost After Russia Focus
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has declared improving relations with China a top priority, signaling a diplomatic pivot back to Beijing after years of deepening ties with Russia.
The shift was announced during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s two-day visit to North Korea last week. Wang met with both Kim and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.
This was Wang’s first trip to the isolated country since 2019. During the intervening years, Pyongyang had invested heavily in strengthening its partnership with Moscow.
Analysts see the move as an effort by North Korea to balance its foreign partnerships. Kim stated his nation places “the greatest value” on boosting the relationship with Beijing.
The renewed diplomatic activity suggests North Korea is seeking stronger economic and political support from its most powerful neighbor.
