Toyota and Isuzu to Build a Hydrogen-Powered Truck
Japanese automakers Toyota and Isuzu have agreed to jointly develop a new light-duty fuel cell truck. They aim to begin mass production and sales of the vehicle in 2025.
A fuel cell vehicle is a type of electric vehicle. It uses hydrogen gas and oxygen from the air to create electricity. This powers the motor. The only emission from the vehicle is water.
The new truck will use Toyota's fuel cell system technology. Isuzu will provide its expertise in commercial vehicle development. The companies say this partnership will help accelerate the use of cleaner transport for delivery and freight services.
The push for hydrogen trucks is part of a larger effort to reduce carbon emissions from commercial vehicles. Battery-electric trucks are also being developed, but fuel cell models can offer longer driving ranges and faster refueling times. This makes them potentially suitable for longer delivery routes.
