Israel Begins Military Buffer Zone Inside Lebanon
Israel is building a large buffer zone inside Lebanese territory. Military analysts describe this as preparation for a long-term occupation of southern Lebanon. The action follows ongoing cross-border clashes with the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah. These clashes began after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7. Israeli officials state the zone is necessary to push Hezbollah forces away from the border. They say this will make it safer for tens of thousands of displaced Israeli civilians to return home. However, expectations are low for a fast diplomatic solution. Israel does not believe current talks with the Lebanese government will quickly lead to Hezbollah's disarmament. The group is a powerful political and military force within Lebanon. The creation of this zone signals a potential new phase of prolonged conflict on Israel's northern border.
