Maradona Death Retrial Begins After Camera Controversy
A new trial has begun for the medical team accused of causing the death of football legend Diego Maradona. The retrial was ordered after the first case collapsed.
The initial trial involved several doctors and nurses. They faced charges of criminal negligence related to Maradona's care before his death in November 2020. Prosecutors allege the medical team failed to properly care for the star, leading to his fatal heart attack.
That first trial was stopped by a judge. The reason was the judge's decision to allow television cameras into the courtroom. An appeals court ruled this created a "media circus" and violated the defendants' right to a fair trial.
The new panel of judges has now banned all audio and video recordings from the proceedings. The eight defendants deny the charges. If convicted, they could face significant prison sentences.
The outcome of this retrial is being closely watched in Argentina and around the world. Maradona remains a national icon after leading Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986.
