Sudan's War on Children Intensifies: Child Casualties Jump 50%
A sharp escalation of violence in Sudan is killing and maiming children at an alarming rate, according to the United Nations children's agency.
UNICEF reports that child casualties surged by 50% in the first three months of 2026 compared to the previous quarter. This spike underscores a brutal three-year trend of extreme violence against children.
"The children of Sudan have endured three years of being killed, injured, and displaced at staggering levels," said the agency's executive director.
The ongoing civil war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Millions of people are displaced, and the country faces severe famine conditions.
UNICEF officials state that all parties to the conflict are violating international law. They are failing to protect civilians, especially children, from the fighting.
The agency is urgently calling for a ceasefire and for safe access to deliver life-saving aid. Without immediate action, officials warn the catastrophe for children will deepen.
