Olympic Frog: New Species Named for Ecuador's Gold Medalist
Scientists in Ecuador have identified a new species of glass frog. The tiny amphibian has been named *Hyalinobatrachium dianae* in honor of Neisi Dajomes. She is an Ecuadorian weightlifter and the nation's first woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Glass frogs are known for their unique transparent skin on their undersides. This allows a clear view of their internal organs. Researchers say naming the frog for Dajomes celebrates a national hero. It also brings attention to Ecuador's rich biodiversity and the need to protect it. The new species was found in the Amazonian foothills of the Andes. It has a distinctive call and specific markings that differentiate it from known glass frogs.
