World's Oldest Gorilla Turns 69
The world's oldest known gorilla has celebrated her 69th birthday. Fatou, a resident of the Berlin Zoo, received a special fruit cake.
Last year, Guinness World Records certified Fatou as the planet's oldest living gorilla. Zoo staff call her the "grand dame" of the institution.
Gorillas in captivity typically live into their 30s or 40s. Fatou's exceptional age makes her a rare case for scientists studying primate longevity.
The Berlin Zoo acquired Fatou in 1959. She arrived as a young gorilla after a sailor traded her for a ship's provisions in France.
Her diet now includes a mix of fruits, vegetables, and yogurt. Zookeepers say she remains in stable health for her advanced age.
