Orban Loses: A Blow to Putin and Trump Allies?
Hungary's long-time leader Viktor Orban has lost power. Opposition leader Peter Magyar won a major victory in the national election, ending Orban's 16-year rule.
Analysts call the result a win for democracy. It follows years of what critics call state corruption and authoritarian control by Orban's Fidesz party.
The political shock will be felt far beyond Hungary. Orban was a close ally of Russia's Vladimir Putin and a supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" ideology.
His defeat weakens a key friend for Putin within the European Union. It also disrupts the network of right-wing populist leaders that includes Trump. The election shows a possible decline in their international influence.
