Seoul's Loneliness Solution: City Offers $4-an-Hour Helpers
More than one in three people in Seoul now live alone. For these solo residents, everyday tasks like visiting a hospital or moving homes can be a major challenge. To help, the city government is expanding a unique "companion service." The program sends helpers to assist with jobs that are difficult to do alone. The service started over four years ago. It first provided escorts for hospital visits. Now, it will also cover moving day logistics. Helpers are paid 5,500 won per hour. This is about four US dollars. The city subsidizes the cost, making it affordable for residents. Seoul's expansion of the program addresses a growing social trend. As solo living increases, the city is creating practical support for everyday needs.
