Congressman Exits Governor Race Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor on Sunday. The decision comes as he faces sexual assault accusations and growing pressure to resign from Congress. Dozens of his former staffers and fellow Democratic lawmakers have called for him to leave office. In a post on social media platform X, Swalwell apologized for unspecified "mistakes in judgment" in his past. He did not provide details. "I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made," he wrote. He stated that battling these claims must now be his sole focus, separate from a political campaign. Swalwell, a Democrat, has served in Congress since 2013. He gained national prominence as a manager in the first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.
