Australia Appoints First Female Army Chief in History
Australia has named Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its next army chief. She will be the first woman to hold the position.
The government announced the historic appointment on Monday. Coyle will take command in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
She is currently the chief of joint capabilities. The promotion is part of a wider reshuffle of the country's military leadership.
The move comes as Australia's military works to recruit more female officers. It also follows a series of serious allegations about the defense force's culture.
