Pearl Fryar, a self-taught artist who turned trees and shrubs into living sculptures, has died. He was 86.
Mr. Fryar discovered his talent for topiary, the art of shaping plants, after moving to Bishopville, South Carolina. With no formal training, he began carving ordinary bushes and trees into extraordinary, swirling shapes.
His work transformed his three-acre yard into a world-famous garden. It became a major tourist attraction in the small town. Visitors traveled from across the globe to see his creations.
Mr. Fryarโs garden will be maintained by a local foundation. His unique artistic vision leaves a lasting living legacy.
