Orban Concedes After 16 Years as Hungarian Voters Deliver Shock Defeat
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in Hungary's national election, ending his 16-year rule.
Orban made the concession in a phone call to Peter Magyar. Magyar is the leader of the Tisza Party, the main opposition group.
"The election result is painful but clear," Orban said from his campaign headquarters in Budapest. "I congratulated the winning party."
The vote is seen as a major rejection of Orban's government. Critics at home and abroad often described his rule as increasingly authoritarian.
His administration was also marked by accusations of corruption and a foreign policy that favored closer ties with Beijing, Moscow, and the United States under former President Donald Trump.
