Ukraine Recovers 182 Prisoners, Including Mariupol Defenders
Ukraine has secured the return of 182 soldiers and civilians from Russian captivity. The group includes fighters who defended the city of Mariupol, site of a brutal, months-long siege in 2022.
One freed civilian was abducted by Russian forces while simply traveling to visit his father. His case highlights the widespread detentions of non-combatants during the war.
The prisoner exchange is one of the largest since the full-scale invasion began. Such swaps are rare diplomatic successes, negotiated through third parties.
All returnees will receive medical care and psychological support. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the work to bring every captive home "will continue."
