Hungary's Choice: A Pro-Russia Leader or an Unknown Challenger
Hungarians vote on Sunday. Their choice could end Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's 14-year rule.
Orbán is known as the European Union's most Kremlin-friendly leader. He has repeatedly blocked or criticized EU support for Ukraine.
His challenger is Péter Magyar, a former insider in Orbán's own party. Magyar promises to clean up corruption and reset relations with the EU.
But experts question his plans. While Magyar criticizes Orbán at home, his stance on supporting Ukraine remains unclear. He has not matched Orbán's direct opposition to aid, but he also avoids strong pro-Ukraine promises.
A change in government could shift Hungary's position within the EU. This might unblock decisions on military and financial aid for Ukraine.
However, a new government would face a parliament still influenced by Orbán's allies. Major policy reversals would be difficult and slow.
The election is a referendum on Orbán's era. The result will determine if Europe's most Russia-aligned leader stays in power.
